Homemade Detergent

Today while folding laundry… (yes im still doing laundry… oh and get this.. we still have fleas… JOY!!!!! but! I am trying some methods recommend by a few bloggers *the water on a saucer is one of those things*) and ill be vacuuming a lot… so I think we will get rid of them in time if we keep Dinah treated and maybe do a bomb… we shall see.. Im just glad I dont see them covering the kids…

I was watching the new 17 children reality show on TLC… the Duggar’s. I have been following this family for years now and just really enjoy seeing how they do things.

They are believers… and its just amazing to see a family so well put together with so many kids.. I would love to be like the mother in that family… minus a few kids :-) I honestly dont think I could birth that many… She seems though like such a patient woman… and really secure in her marriage and faith. Very inspiring.

One thing on the show they talked about was how they save money.. and one way was to make their own detergant. They do like 150 loads a MONTH… Lord bless her :-)

I didnt get their recipe… *they didnt tell the exact measurements on the show..* but I found one that sounds very similar on a blog... so here goes…

*THE PHOTO BELOW IS NOT MINE… I TOOK IT OFF THE WEBSITE I GOT THE RECIPE OFF OF… I USE AN ALMOST 100% NATURAL SOAP VS. THE PURE AND NATURAL ONE LISTED BELOW.*

S.O.’s Home-Made Cheap Laundry Soap

  1. 1 bar Fels Naptha soap, grated (comes out to about 2 cups)
You can find this in the grocery store laundry aisle. S.O. grates it on our cheese grater.
  2. 1 c Borax
Comes from the grocery store laundry aisle and some hardware stores.
  3. 1 c Washing Soda
My sister can find this at her nice grocery store but we had to order online. Others report that they found it in little grocery stores or Mexican markets.
  4. 1/4 c OxyClean (not necessary, but we add it)

Mix it all together into a bumpy, granular mix. Don’t worry about stuff getting correctly dispersed, even if it doesn’t quite look like it does.

Use 1T for a light load

Use 2T for a large or dirty load (It’s true! Only 2 Tablespoons per load!)

Right now I use a vegan detergant from THE LOTE TREE… that I ADORE… but its expensive… so I really would love to find a way to still get that sort of detergant but at a more affordable price… my skin is so sensitive though that it may not work for me. Im not sure if washing soda and borax will affect me… I might use THE LOTE TREE soaps though to add into the detergant. I love her soaps :-) I use nothing but her soaps on my face and body.. they are wonderful.. so I can only imagine how nice they’d be in a detergant.

*update: I have been using this recipe for almost a year now and LOVE IT!!!* It is fantastic and works beautifully.
