Rash – readers chime in

So! a week or so ago, Owen developed a rash all over his legs, his arms, back of the neck and a tiny spot on his face.

His torso area and back have stayed clear (except for the small spot at the top of his neck). Also his cute little tush as well was clear. It was just his limbs.

We have a few guesses as to what has caused this rash but as of today we are unsure… Especially since the rash doesn’t seem to be going away.

Here are the culprits we think could have caused it…
(All happened within the same 24 hours)

photo-41) He stepped on a bee (honey bee)

2) We used a store bought sun screen – I am not sure the brand. We took a friends kiddos to the pool and our kids were really intrigued by their sun screen (since it was spray on) – so we gave in and let them use it, even though Im pretty strict when it comes to sun screens (we use www.lovingnaturals.com 100% otherwise). Because Owen wears a swim shirt – we did not spray any on his torso or back. We also didn’t spray it on his face, but I do recall him rubbing his face with his wrist, after being sprayed on the arms. So I think the spot on his face could have come from that. This makes the most sense to me… but I’m just not sure.

3) He ate a BUTT LOAD of black berries… He has had black berries many times before though with no trouble AT ALL. So I dont think this is it, but could be?

I think ONE of those 3 things caused the rash… but what I dont get is why its not healing. A few days after his rash appeared, he was stung YET AGAIN by the same type of bee (he stepped on one, again) – his toe swelled up around the sting, but that was it. No all over breakout. So that makes me want to weed out the bee sting.

His little legs and arms STILL feel like hard goosebumps all over them. It feels dry as could be.

I use all natural soaps and creams on him. I also use natural homemade detergent and have for years… so I know those arent the culprits. Its just a mystery.

So I figured if anything ill blog about it & maybe one of you have experienced this too :) – and can share some insight.

That being said I plan to make him a Dr’s apt and take him in next week. The good thing is, he seems fine besides the look of the bumps. He doesn’t seem to itch very much, so for that I am thankful.

Here is one more photo….
Sorry the quality is poor – ipad photo had to do for today.

Hi Drea! James sometimes get this type of rash too – and I use mostly all-natural, dye free, fragrance free soaps, sunscreens, etc. My first thought would be that it was the spray-on sunscreen. I would give him some Benadryl (or whatever child allergy meds you have out there). Sometimes James will also get a similar rash from being in a highly chlorinated pool, so if you were swimming at a public pool that could also be a reaction to the pool chemicals. It also looks a little like heat rash – but that would be more likely on his torso. I’d try Benadryl, or hydrocortisone cream. A cool bath with salts, and a good layer of lotion usually helps James clear up too. Hope that helps!

hmm, the sunblock would be my 1st thought too,,,,but it also looks like the eczema rash Si gets when he gets too hot, or his bath is too warm, at least that is what our pedi said it was, but she seemed unsure…but he had them on and off since 8 months or so….I would think O would have had it previously if it is eczema. I would also think of different or new foods he ate recently, which can be the main culprit for rashes. is he scratching it?

Jayden had something similar, but he has Eczema too. It could be the heat. I put aloe vera gel on him and it got better.

Macy had a similar rash. I agree with Mary Beth. It looks very similar to eczema. Could be heat too.

Me, my sister, and my nephew all have eczema, and that’s what it looks like when we have breakouts. The heat and too mucg sun causes mine to flare up. I also get sun-poisoning that looks very similar.

It looks a lot like a rash I just got over and mine took over two weeks to go away. I was still pregnant when I got it and the doctor said it looked like contact dermitis. I hadn’t used anything new, but she had told me that sometimes during pregnancy you can develop an allergy to something you have never been allergic to before. I had to use a cream and Zyrtec to finally get rid of it. My vote is for the sunscreen. With my sons allergy to peanuts if he eats it, then the rash typically starts on his belly and the his face swells, breathing issues ect…, so I doubt its the blackberries, but they can develop a food allergy even after having eaten the food several times before. I don’t think it was the bee ating either because of the locations where the rash is, although I am not a doctor, but with the pictures and your explanations I really think the sunscreen makes the most aince and that it is probably contact dermitis. Hope it goes away soon, mine itched terribly, so I hope his does not.

McKenna (my 7 year old) is really sensitive to sunscreen. Owen’s rash looks a lot like what she would look like when we put anything but baby sunscreen on her.

My guess is ecema our little one has had it since she was about 1 yr. old. I give her Oatmeal baths she has had several prescriptions for it to no avail but it is not that bad. I also use an Oatmeal lotion I used the Avon brand or Johnson’s brand . I only allow her 10 min baths since the water tends to really activate it. There are tons of info on this. Hope this helps and Owen will get some relief.

My guess is the sunscreen. That is the only different thing he has used. I hope his rash clears up really soon, poor baby.

I would try hydrocortisone cream because it works for both eczema & allergic reactions. Sometimes lotions can make it worse so maybe lay off of those until it clears up. I would assume it was the sunscreen just because of the location of the rash. Hope it clears up soon!

My daughter battle with eczema, and it looks simular to that! Dry air, chlorine, certain skin care products make it flair up like that. I’d guess the sunscreen.

My first thought would be sunscreen too, but that is what Jonah’s eczema looks like. But he has had eczema his whole life. But it has changed in texture/severity over the years. I truly believe eczema is an allergic reaction to SOMETHING, just unsure of what. You could try some Benadryl and see if it calms it down. But I would think if it were the sunscreen it would have cleared up by now, a week later…..we have experienced TONS of skin issues around here, so I am pretty well versed in it (lily has SOME eczema but also gets hives fro certain stuff too)

One of the little boys I watch is allergic to Coppertone sunscreen and when he had a reaction to it, the rash looked very similar.

Benadryl would be my choice, too. If it’s an allergic reaction, regardless of the source, it will calm the histamine response and let the rash go away (it must be annoying, even if he doesn’t let you know). Just give it before nap time and he will sleep like a champ. I don’t like to give new meds at bedtime so I can be aware of any reactions. Benadryl is pretty safe though.

My kids get the same rashes from certain sunscreens! I am sure that is what it is.

Yep, sunscreen rash. My daughter gets this if we use any sunscreen (even all natural ones) besides baby coppertone. The rash is tiny clogged pores. Use a wash with salysilic acid in it. I use my liquid neutrogena face soap (actually I use the publix generic version..much cheaper) and it will clear up in a day or 2. That is what the derm told us to use. He said scrubbing it or lotioning it will not help, you need something is draw the clog from the pore.

    Good luck.
