Natural Astringent using Essential Oils

I recently posted about how I cleanse my face using jojoba oil along with how I moisturize my face using my homemade lotion bars… but what about a natural astringent to help make sure you get the skin REALLY clean.

If you haven’t discovered Witch Hazel. I am about to introduce you to something you may very well become obsessed with using. The first time I used this on my face, after cleansing my skin, I WAS SHOCKED at how much build up and dirt was still there. While my face LOOKED clean in the mirror… and to the touch, it really wasn’t.

Before I explain how I use it on my skin, let me explain first what Witch Hazel is:

Witch hazel is a plant. The leaf, bark, and twigs are used to make medicine. You may see a product called witch hazel water (Hamamelis water, distilled witch hazel extract). This is a liquid that is distilled from dried leaves, bark, and partially dormant twigs of Hamamelis virginiana.” – Thank you WEBMD

So why does rubbing a plant, leaf, bark, twig medicine on my face help my skin?

Witch hazel contains something in it called “Tannins”. When applied directly to the skin, witch hazel can help reduce swelling, help repair broken skin, and fight bacteria. It is also great at getting all that junk out of your pores and absorbing any yuckies left after cleansing.

A Natural Astringent using Essential OilsSo how do you use it?

1. After I cleanse my face, using the Oil Cleansing method – I then take a cotton ball and place that cotton ball on the top of a small brown amber bottle I have filled with Witch Hazel. The reason I place my witch hazel into this bottle, is for better control but also because I mix in some Essential Oils as well.

I put like 9 drops of Sacred Frankincense into my Witch Hazel Amber Bottle.
Sometimes I use Blend of Rose… but I love the benefits and smell of Frankincense so much, it tends to be my go to.

Sacred Frankincense is an excellent addition to anything skin related. Especially if you have dry and/or mature complexion. It helps smooth out wrinkles, and is an antiseptic tonic to all skin. It balances oily skin and is a good tonic for normal skin.

So I put it in a lot. :) Its good stuff. (it has many other uses too, besides just skin care. Feel free to read more on all its benefits HERE.)

2. Once cotton ball is on the Bottle, tip it over so cotton ball absorbs the Witch Hazel. Then rub the cotton ball all over your face. I tend to rub mine in an upward motion. I then rub the cotton ball on my neck too. You’d be shocked at how gross our necks get!

3. Once I am done with the Witch Hazel I always moisturize. I use my lotion bars, but you could use whatever you’re use to.

and that is it!

When you do this, you may have to use 3-4 cotton balls btw. ;-)

I tried to capture how a dirty cotton ball looks… but not sure this photo really does it justice.
