Making it Home – Before/After Guest Room

Redoing our guestroom/office with the paint Dusty Miller by Glidden

Those new to the blog wont know, that this last year in 2015, we moved 2 times (twice within the same state), making the move into our current home, move #10 in 12 years. At first, the moving didn’t really bother me much. Our earlier years it was exciting to move some place new… but the more moves we made, the harder they became… and the older our children got and ourselves, the less exciting it felt. It became more of a dread and something you truly did not look forward to.

Despite this, I have learned that no matter where you live and for how long, making it a home is so important. Some times you may live in an Apartment or rental property that makes this harder. We’ve had our share of those… Back in Ohio we couldn’t paint a single room in the rental we lived in… and hanging picture frames or any sort of decor was discouraged. So I get that struggle. There are still small ways to create a space that make that current place, feel more at home.

Decorating with fun pillows you love. Adding a few special pieces in your kitchen. Throwing up some fresh towels that are yours, new, fluffy and nice, can really bring about a much cozier “more homey” feel in that rental bathroom you use.

New Bedding is great too! Add a new lamp to your living space… or a fun center piece to your kitchen table.

Despite the struggles that each of our moves brought, I am thankful for the experiences we have had to go through. Each move, brought tears, struggle and joys… but without a doubt, each move brought growth.

We currently own the home {sorta, haha we have a mortgage} we live in. Its a beautiful 4 bedroom in SC. While it may not have the land I “dream of” :) [I secretly want a farm!] and isn’t open concept like our old Atlanta Home. Each home has “special” parts of it that we will always enjoy and love… but each home is unique and beautiful in their own ways… and we are very blessed. I want my boys to have found memories in this new home. Make it a place we feel comfortable in. A place that feels like ours… and a place that is unique “to us” and our personal taste, preferences and loves.

One of the ways I am doing that is to paint.

When we found a home we knew would work for our family, we had to look pass differences in decor, colors, styles… The home we are in had everything we needed, but I will be honest, needed some work inside. It just was not our taste. Part of the fun in buying and owning a home though, is making it your own… and I looked forward to re doing parts of it.

We re-did the Living Room already
– I need to post an update to this post though, because I’ve added a floating wall shelf, that really adds a lot to the room. I hope to do the re-post soon enough. :)

We also re did the kitchen.
I hope to add a back splash still to our kitchen. Money is a factor to this though. Back splashes aren’t nearly as cheap as paint. :)

So this weekend I tackled the Guestroom.

The guestroom was obviously the former home owners boys bedroom. It was a dark forest green… and just was not a great color for a more adult type room… I also felt the color made the room feel a lot smaller… and well, it had to go.

Now, the before and afters.

This room functions btw as a Guestroom but it also functions as Travis’ office. Travis has an office at the church but many days he does study at home, so that he doesn’t have to drive so far. Also Travis gets up super early most mornings and when he does, this is his place to come pray, read, study, etc… I don’t have anything up on the walls yet. I do hope to put a large mirror up and maybe some small touches later. For now, its a pretty clean slate.

The color is by Glidden and is called Dusty Miller.
Its the perfect combo of Gray/Blue/Green. It is a warmer gray. I love it! In fact, we may paint the guest bath this same color too.
