SIMPLE Essential Oil Bug Spray Repellent

Simple Essential Oil Bug Spray Repellent

Those who live in South Carolina or anywhere warm at the moment, are beginning to see the lovely mosquito population coming out with a vengeance. With all the scares of the Zika Virus as well (although its hard to know what to believe, if I’m honest), either way, warding off mosquito bites this summer is an absolute must in my book.

I can’t stand DEET repellents, although effective, I question the safety of lathering ourselves in these on a daily basis.

Most insect repellents out there are loaded with toxic chemicals, including the pesticide DEET, which is so poisonous that even the Environmental Protection Agency says you should wash it off your skin when you return indoors, avoid breathing it in and not spray it directly on your face. Think about it–if this chemical can kill mosquitoes, it can likely do some harm to other life forms too.” [source]

Super Simple Bug Spray Repellent using Essential Oils.So making a SIMPLE Essential Oil Bug Spray Repellent is something we use here and have for the last 2 summers. It seems to do the trick. Not only is it safe but it smells great. Although some people who don’t like the smell of citronella or lemon grass, may like adding in a few other oils to make it to their liking. For our family, full on “bug off” oil smell is okay in our books.

So here is what you need.

SIMPLE Essential Oil Bug Spray Repellent

Ingredients

Instructions

  1. Mix your witch hazel and essential oils in a glass spray bottle (I used an 8oz one but you can use a smaller one if you'd like. We have a lot of kids to spray, so 8 oz was a better fit for our family).
  2. Before each use, shake well!
  3. Apply all over your body, skin, clothes, etc... reapply as needed. (If you sweat a lot, you will need to reapply occasionally, depending on how long you are outdoors)
  4. Other alternatives to Bug Off Essential Oil will be listed below this recipe....

To those unfamiliar with Essential Oils.
I use Rocky Mountain Oils (they are a non-MLM company that I have used for going on 2 years now. I love them! You can read more on why I use them OVER HERE.)

They sell an Oil called Bug Off – it is already blended together for you, a beautiful combination of Essential Oils great for warding off Mosquito’s among other pest… it smells great and for those who don’t have a collection of Essential Oils at their disposal, this is the way to go.

For those who want to make their Repellent with their own combination of Oils, a few oils I would suggest are Lemongrass, Citronella, Eucalyptus Radiata and Rosemary.

Now! As a summer kick off – Rocky Mountain Oils is sponsoring a giveaway on my blog with this post. So glad they are willing to do these and give a randomly drawn reader a chance to win some great oils.

  3. This is awesome! I’m not a fan of using deet products either. I’ve wondered what using such products can do to our bodies. I love that with this recipe it’s simple and you know exactly what is being used. Thanks!

  4. Looking forward to trying RMO essential oils. I use a lot of peppermint, cinnamon, clove, and citrus oils in my hot and cold drinks. What is your favorite oil and why? Also, please pick me for the contest winner! LOL

  5. I was just looking on their website for some oils…and then visited your blog today and saw this giveaway. I would love to win this. I don’t use conventional bug spray, but every natural remedy I’ve tried has never stopped me and my kids from getting tons of mosquito bites.

  6. I NEED THIS!! If there is 1000 people and 1 mosquito, I go home with 1000 mosquito bites. They LOVE me and I do not return the sentiment!

  7. I’d love this set! Word to the wise about lemongrass though, the max dermal rate is 0.7% for skin so that needs to be factored in when formulating the recipe. Also, if your in an area with bees. Don’t use lemongrass, they are attracted to it. In fact, bee keepers use it to attract the bees into their hives. That’s something I recently learned ? ?.

  8. This would be a great win. I love using RMO’s and experimenting with different blends. Thanks for posting about this.

  9. My favorite blends are Tranquility and Immune Strength. I’m recovering from surgery now but look forward to the day I can go hiking again and use Bug Off.
