Owen’s 2nd Birthday – in Review

Well now that the puke-ness is gone, we hope… I can finally sit down and post these birthday photos. I am behind on A LOT.. not just blog stuff… but also paid post – photo editing and house work. Although today I got a huge dent into major cleaning ;-) – and was thankful for what I accomplished. The boys even helped.

Here are some photos from Owen’s 2nd birthday that took place last Saturday. It was a sweet and simple party… We had a good time hanging out with friends. Owen was so adorable during the singing of Happy Birthday. His smile and expression are forever etched into my mind :) – so sweet.

The Birthday Theme btw was designed by Tracy. I wish I had the talent to decorate more like she does :) – but birthday decor just isnt a talent of mine. I tried tho :)

My mom shipped Owen a gift. We always find humor in her recycled box choices :)

All Night

Travis snagged these pictures yesterday while we waited in the ER. Owen was so cuddly. In these picture he is playing with my ipad using the app “Talking Carl?” – something like that. It was a recommendation from Heather. He enjoys it.

I tell you, waiting in the ER with out a TV, ipad and cell phones – can’t imagine HAHA. Well I could. We did bring other things to entertain him with… and really he felt so bad he really didn’t want to do much any way. Funny how comfortable we get with our “techie” gear.

Owen btw slept all night last night… although he woke up feeling kind of crummy this morning :( – but so far no throwing up. We are very ready to be “out of the sickness” wagon… and start feeling healthy again. When it hits us… it hits us! Makes you thankful for the good health you do have most of the time.

Becoming a Turning 2 Tradition

Well… today Owen turned 2. Officially :) – I had hopes of taking him downtown to do portraits… instead we spent hours in the ER getting a CT Scan on him.

It all started with Sunday evening… we have a high deck… and there is a rather steep set of stairs… we have it blocked however with a baby gate… to keep Owen from ever climbing down. So far its worked great. Well… last night while we were entertaining a friend – Owen and the other 2 were on the back deck eating a bowl of ice cream. We were right inside next to the screen door, within 15 feet or so of Owen… when all of a sudden we heard a crash – tumble and then screaming from not only Owen but Caleb. Caleb’s screams came because he was so scared Owen was badly hurt… it upset him really bad… Owens, well, he busted his bottom lip and gum … and strained his right leg. We thought this was it… and all was fine… He stayed up an hour 1/2 or more after this happened and went to bed as normal.

This morning however, Owen woke up… within minutes of being up, we started to feed him some oat meal. That is when he coughed. We have all been battling a cough, so I didnt think much of it. He coughed hard and then gagged on the oat meal in his mouth – and then puked it up. We honestly didn’t think anything of it. He had no fever. After throwing up and shedding a tear – he was totally fine. Went on as normal. We just figured it was because he coughed so hard it caused the gag reflex.

An hour or so later – we dropped him and his brothers off at our neighbor’s… while Travis and I went to a COR meeting we had to attend.. it was 2 hrs long. While gone we got a phone call from Jessie… poor Owen had thrown up a number of more times since we dropped him off :( – it obviously was not due to a cough or oatmeal… we just assumed it was a bug.

I felt horrible. We had NO CLUE he was sick. Otherwise we would of never exposed Jessie’s house to that sort of thing.. she after all has 2 young kids herself… thats the last thing we’d ever want is to get them sick.

We brought Owen home… where he threw up another 3 – 5 more times… and then laid him down for a nap. Our neighbor mentioned to us that sometimes throwing up like that, after a fall like Owen had – can be a result of a concussion. I had never heard of this, but sure enough you can google it and its right there.

Owen waiting at ER for Cat-scan #erI called a Dr. my friend Michelle goes to – to talk to an on call nurse… since we have no primary Dr… I knew I needed someone to ask. They highly recommended since the two incidents were so close – that we bring him in.

The Dr. checked him out – and even on the way to the Dr. he threw up again.. this time dry heaving. Poor guy! Taite during this would just close his eyes. He didn’t want to see it at all (do you blame him?).

The Dr. as well like the nurse suggested we get him a scan. You just can never be to careful with head injuries… and since the boys are covered now and we knew money would not be a problem.. we figured we may as well take him to have it done.

The Hospital was great… It was a children’s hospital… and they did a great job getting us through… although it did take a little longer than we had hoped… mainly because Owen would not let them do the CT-Scan. He screamed his little head off.

They had to give Owen sleepy meds to help calm him for scan. He's acting a weeee loopy. #erSo they had to give him a sedative… and boy… let me tell you, that stuff sure makes for a funny Owen :) – he was talking out the top of his head.. Pointing at everything… and his head was bobbling all over the place. He was so adorable oddly enough :) – and after about 15 minutes he was much more calm (although never asleep) – and still enough with help from his Daddy… to get the CT-Scan done.

The scan came back clear, thankfully! The Dr. said his throwing up could very well be from a mild concussion.. but there really is no way of knowing. The only way to really know is to wait and see if one of us gets a stomach bug. If we do, then we will know it was not related to his fall.

Either way. Im glad Owen is ok.

We gave him some dinner after the long ER visit… only to have him throw it all up minutes later. He went down to bed crying… still very tipsy from that medicine they gave him… but we are hoping he will sleep through the night and feel much better tomorrow.

Im just trying to prepare myself for a possible stomach bug overtake in the house… and again praying our neighbors don’t suffer it as well :(

We joked with the ER staff… that our older two boys had stitches by age 2… so ER visits for them by this age… so I suppose Owen on his birthday had to keep with that tradition and go to the ER as well.

BOYS :)

I have a feeling I am in for many more visits….

Thank you for those who have called/emailed/commented and text’d us in regards to Owen. Hope this update puts everyone at ease :)

Owen’s 2nd Birthday – The Frosting

Yesterday was Owen’s 2nd Birthday Party! It wasn’t to elaborate :) – but sweet…
I really do not feel I have the gift of “party planning”… but I try. Birthdays for me growing up were a day of spoiling ;-) – I remember feeling like a princess on those days… so its kind of a tradition I have wanted to continue with my own kids… although the more kids we have, the harder that gets haha…

I was a bit slack this time with my “healthy habits” – and resorted to a lot of “easier” methods to feed everyone. Mainly because I just felt bad all week and was tired… and didn’t have the energy… Its a once a year thing (or for us 3 times a year) – so I am totally cool with a splurge of sugar, junk and fun for the kids :) – on that day. Its the one day that “mommy rules” seem to go out the window. Although after Owen’s 3rd cupcake and Taite’s 6th Oreo, I began to twitch inside haha and did say no.

With Owen’s Cup Cakes I did a new icing recipe and LOVED how it came out.

I’m not a huge icing fan personally… but I like to make my own for the kids – since store icing has all sorts of weird stuff in it… most icing recipes I have seen contain “crisco.” I was on pinterest the other day in search of a “crisco” free recipe for icing and I found it. THE KIDS ATE IT UP :) – and the adults.

so here goes…

Ingredients:

5 Tablespoons Flour
1 cup Milk (I used whole)
1 teaspoon Vanilla
1 cup Unsalted Butter
1 cup Granulated Sugar (not Powdered Sugar!)

Directions:

Bake your cupcakes or cake ahead of time and have those cooling. I baked white vanilla cupcakes… but this icing would be magical with chocolate cake :)

In a small sauce pan whisk flour into milk and heat on medium. Stir it constantly until it thickens. It will thicken as it heats and eventually turn into a brownie thick mixture.

Once thickened, remove from heat and let it cool to room temperature. I was in a rush so I threw mine in the fridge afterwards – it only took a few minutes to cool in there :) – Mix in vanilla after cooled…

While the mixture is cooling, cream the butter (I melted mine slightly for 45 seconds in the microwave) and mix in sugar until light and fluffy. The sugar/butter mixture should not look very grainy when you finish mixing it :).

Then add the cooled milk/flour/vanilla mixture and beat the mess out of it. I put my kitchen aid mixer on the highest possible speed :) – Caleb thought it was going to take off saying it was “going 1000 miles per hour“. Beat it until it all combines and resembles whipped cream.

Once whipped I put all the frosting into a plastic ziplock and then cut the tip of the ziplock in order to decorate the cup cakes. If you were icing a cake you could just use a spatula and get it straight from the mixing bowl :)

Top with some sprinkles and if you are into food coloring you could prob drop a few colors of that into it to change it up a bit :) – we just left it white.

More Birthday Pictures to come later :)
