Well… today Owen turned 2. Officially :) – I had hopes of taking him downtown to do portraits… instead we spent hours in the ER getting a CT Scan on him.
It all started with Sunday evening… we have a high deck… and there is a rather steep set of stairs… we have it blocked however with a baby gate… to keep Owen from ever climbing down. So far its worked great. Well… last night while we were entertaining a friend – Owen and the other 2 were on the back deck eating a bowl of ice cream. We were right inside next to the screen door, within 15 feet or so of Owen… when all of a sudden we heard a crash – tumble and then screaming from not only Owen but Caleb. Caleb’s screams came because he was so scared Owen was badly hurt… it upset him really bad… Owens, well, he busted his bottom lip and gum … and strained his right leg. We thought this was it… and all was fine… He stayed up an hour 1/2 or more after this happened and went to bed as normal.
This morning however, Owen woke up… within minutes of being up, we started to feed him some oat meal. That is when he coughed. We have all been battling a cough, so I didnt think much of it. He coughed hard and then gagged on the oat meal in his mouth – and then puked it up. We honestly didn’t think anything of it. He had no fever. After throwing up and shedding a tear – he was totally fine. Went on as normal. We just figured it was because he coughed so hard it caused the gag reflex.
An hour or so later – we dropped him and his brothers off at our neighbor’s… while Travis and I went to a COR meeting we had to attend.. it was 2 hrs long. While gone we got a phone call from Jessie… poor Owen had thrown up a number of more times since we dropped him off :( – it obviously was not due to a cough or oatmeal… we just assumed it was a bug.
I felt horrible. We had NO CLUE he was sick. Otherwise we would of never exposed Jessie’s house to that sort of thing.. she after all has 2 young kids herself… thats the last thing we’d ever want is to get them sick.
We brought Owen home… where he threw up another 3 – 5 more times… and then laid him down for a nap. Our neighbor mentioned to us that sometimes throwing up like that, after a fall like Owen had – can be a result of a concussion. I had never heard of this, but sure enough you can google it and its right there.
I called a Dr. my friend Michelle goes to – to talk to an on call nurse… since we have no primary Dr… I knew I needed someone to ask. They highly recommended since the two incidents were so close – that we bring him in.
The Dr. checked him out – and even on the way to the Dr. he threw up again.. this time dry heaving. Poor guy! Taite during this would just close his eyes. He didn’t want to see it at all (do you blame him?).
The Dr. as well like the nurse suggested we get him a scan. You just can never be to careful with head injuries… and since the boys are covered now and we knew money would not be a problem.. we figured we may as well take him to have it done.
The Hospital was great… It was a children’s hospital… and they did a great job getting us through… although it did take a little longer than we had hoped… mainly because Owen would not let them do the CT-Scan. He screamed his little head off.
So they had to give him a sedative… and boy… let me tell you, that stuff sure makes for a funny Owen :) – he was talking out the top of his head.. Pointing at everything… and his head was bobbling all over the place. He was so adorable oddly enough :) – and after about 15 minutes he was much more calm (although never asleep) – and still enough with help from his Daddy… to get the CT-Scan done.
The scan came back clear, thankfully! The Dr. said his throwing up could very well be from a mild concussion.. but there really is no way of knowing. The only way to really know is to wait and see if one of us gets a stomach bug. If we do, then we will know it was not related to his fall.
Either way. Im glad Owen is ok.
We gave him some dinner after the long ER visit… only to have him throw it all up minutes later. He went down to bed crying… still very tipsy from that medicine they gave him… but we are hoping he will sleep through the night and feel much better tomorrow.
Im just trying to prepare myself for a possible stomach bug overtake in the house… and again praying our neighbors don’t suffer it as well :(
We joked with the ER staff… that our older two boys had stitches by age 2… so ER visits for them by this age… so I suppose Owen on his birthday had to keep with that tradition and go to the ER as well.
BOYS :)
I have a feeling I am in for many more visits….
Thank you for those who have called/emailed/commented and text’d us in regards to Owen. Hope this update puts everyone at ease :)
