Innocent Words

IMG_1407On Travis’ birthday this past Friday – we kept it simple.

Morning gifts… a yummy breakfast.

Time with the kids outside…

and then that afternoon we sang happy birthday, went to dinner & afterwards went to our church to see a drama called “Come see the Lamb.”

Our neighbors kiddos wanted to come sing Happy Birthday to Travis… and their innocent words were so funny to us. First of all, the cake I made Travis….

Well… it didnt look pretty :)

I made a pound cake with home made icing made with sucanat and cocoa, it was great… however, the cake looked a bit like a pile of crap. Yeah, may as well say it :) – but It did at least taste good.

When our neighbors lil girl came in and saw it she said…

“Wow…. that cake is really small!!”

Then she looked up towards our Christmas tree and said….

“You all have a pretend Christmas tree!” hahaha…

Then asked where we got it ;-)

Im thankful for simplicity…

Nothing to complicated…

And just great times with family and friends.

Below are a few photos from the drama….

Daring to think Differently

On Saturday I attended an event called HELP PORTRAIT. I participated in this last year while living in NC… and knew after that experience that I wanted to do it again.

After finding out through the Help Portrait forum’s that there was one locally. I immediately signed up.

IMG_9851-134I just think it is such a simple way that we can serve… while it may not seem like much to some, it really is a blessing to others. I for one know how difficult financial situations are right now. My husband has been without a job since August. It is hard to find work… and even though he has a masters degree, it still will not happen over night. For us, this year… and really the past few years, we could not afford to pay for a photographer to take our portraits. Thankfully through my profession as a photographer, I have friends who give me the generous hook up… and that is the ONLY way we could of done it.

So for those who do not have connections in this way, its hard to get a portrait done of the family, without feeling the pressure of cost…

I love being able to just give this to people… and honestly if I had more of me & more hours in a day, Id do so much more.

While at Help Portrait this year, I had a young man helping me set up a backdrop… I had no back drop materials, since I got rid of most of mine before our big GA move… so he hooked me up with what he had. As I looked at this backdrop set up though, I just thought to myself how much cooler it be to just use a slate gray wall I saw right by my area… It was the perfect size for smaller families and individuals/couples…

So even after having my area set up….

I dared to ask…

“Can I use that wall instead?” – I felt like a loser lol…

Seriously, I had this heavy weight that everyone in the room thought I was an idiot. But as the day progressed it really was awesome. I loved the look much more than the fabric backdrop. I loved that it was different than anyone else in the room. I loved that I was able to take a plain spot, that no one else thought of – and make it special.

Daring to think differently really can be hard…

I think we should all try it :)

At the end of the day, another photographer came up to me and just encouraged me – letting me know how creative I was to use that space… It did my heart good to hear :)

So here’s to an awesome weekend photographing for Help Portrait.

Blessing Families.

*Btw: The mom who is expecting in one of the photos – was being induced that night! I thought she was just adorable… and said a prayer that her labor would go smoothly…

Trigger Power :)

I finally got some triggers to play with on my camera… using off camera lighting.

I will say this… IT IS UNCOMFORTABLE for me.

It is not something I understand at all fully… but I am willing to learn, play and grow. So heres hoping ;-)
TO play with it, and make sure the trigger worked, I sat my flash near the boys who were playing a board game.

They must of been really into the game because not once did they mentioned the flash :)

You wouldn’t of known it, but this room was not dark when I took this photo ;-)

& I used it in this mirror shot too.

Its different :) – but worth learning. Hope everyone has a great weekend.

I spent 8am-4pm doing HELP PORTRAIT – went great! Met some great photographers & had a good time blessing others with great portraits. Hope to post photos from that at a later date ;-)

Happy 35th!

Someone very special in my life turns 35 today!
When we married he had JUST turned 26 :) – boy does time fly.

Clean = Better Play

I have learned… that less is MORE – in so many areas… and one of those areas happens to be TOYS. This week we got a HUGE box (as tall as Caleb) – and filled it with TONS of toys. The boys did not hesitate & I was honestly surprised how many they were willing to part with.

After things were organized I was so happy to see how much better they played. There were able to find what they really wanted… and lay on a bed without something in the way.

It is worth taking the time to do…

So if you haven’t… get a box.

Because Christmas is coming… and its better to do it now than later ;-)
